RBS Green Index (RBSGRS)

Investing in the green sector

RBS is the largest financier of renewable energy in the World, with over $2 billion committed in 2006 alone (Source: RBS and the Environment Report – October 2007).

We achieved the highest possible rating (AAA) for environmental and social management, by the Innovest ratings agency in 2007. Innovest specialises in analysing companies' performance on environmental, social, and strategic governance issues.

As a responsible business we recognise the significant global threat posed by climate change and try hard to make a difference where we can. We are committed to reducing the amount of carbon we use in our business by focusing on minimising emissions at source. This means investment in energy efficiency measures and the purchase of renewable electricity. Our aim is to reduce the carbon intensity of our operations by appropriately one-fifth between 2007 and 2011.

RBSGRS has been designed to provide a performance benchmark for investors interested in the green sector, which includes but is not limited to alternative energy, energy efficiency, recycling and organic foods. RBSGRS equally-weights its constituent equities and tracks the performance of thirty of the largest listed companies which in the opinion of RBS, operate within the 'green' business sectors globally. The equities included come from the major developed markets as well as from emerging markets, if they have developed market listings.

In order for an equity to be an eligible constituent for inclusion in the RBSGRS, companies must derive a significant proportion of their revenue from their respective 'Green' activities.

A selection of the companies included in the RBSGRS includes; MEMC Electronic Materials, Whole Foods Market inc, Invensys Plc, Allied Waste Industries inc and Kurita Water industries ltd.

RBSGRS includes a mechanism whereby exposure to the underlying stocks is automatically reduced when markets become highly volatile, and increased when calmer market conditions prevail.
